言わずと知れたBeatles終盤期の曲ですが ジョン＝レノンはポールが サイモン＆ガーファンクルの「明日にかける橋」みたいな曲をやりたいと言って作っただけの詰まらない曲だと言っています
確かに演奏はポール以外 脱力感や「やることやりゃいいんだろ？」みたいな匂いもしなくもなく とすれば「ポール＝マッカートニーの曲」と呼んでもいいのかも知れません その後の最終アルバム「アビィロード」では４人が力を出し合っているので アビィーロードの方が名盤なのでしょう
けれどポールが Let it be と呟き それを曲に変えたのは 実は深い意味があるような気がします 「バラバラになっていくバンドメンバー とりわけ一方の天才ジョン＝レノンがオノ＝ヨーコに夢中になり 離れて行く様子つぶさに見ていて バンドの終焉を予感していたのではないか」と感じます だから サイモン＆ガーファンクルの真似事とは 私には思えません
そして この曲を聴くとき 何故か「英語は日本語に訳せない」と感じてしまうのです

と訳されていましたが Let it beは「あるがままを受け入れる」のではなくLet it beとしか訳せない気がします 誰かは「なるようになる」と訳すかもしれないし 他の誰かが「自然とそうなるだけ」と感じるかもしれませんが その中のどれでもあり どれでもない気がするので「Let it be」と感じるしかありません
歌詞の中には 聖母マリアが舞い降りてくる…とか おそらくポールにとっては霊感は感じたものの 本当にマリアが眼前に現れたわけでもなく おそらく彼なりの「洒落」か 実在の恋人か…とも感じますが
歌詞の中で「Whisper words of wisdom」は深い意味を感じ
「知恵や悟りは 囁きによって得る」 …そんな気がします
